Edo Election 2024: Last Days Permutations and Expectations

As the Edo State governorship election approaches on September 21, 2024, several dynamics are shaping the political landscape. The main parties in contention are the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), with both parties gearing up for a highly competitive race.

One of the key themes in this election is the intense intra-party maneuvering, particularly within the APC. There have been concerns about former governor Adams Oshiomhole’s influence over the candidate selection process, with critics accusing him of sidelining strong candidates in favor of his preferred choice. This has stirred tension within the party, as some fear this could weaken their chances against the PDP (The Nation Newspaper)(New Telegraph).

On the PDP side, the party has been capitalizing on the perception that the current administration under Governor Godwin Obaseki has not met the electorate's expectations, leading to some internal dissatisfaction. However, the PDP remains hopeful that its candidate, Ighodalo, can leverage this discontent to their advantage (New Telegraph).

Voter concerns range from economic stagnation to security issues, with many calling for better governance and an end to vote-buying and political manipulation, which have historically plagued elections in the region. Security and the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will also be critical in ensuring a fair election (The Nation Newspaper).

As a state; Edo has exhibited characteristics of the American political term of a "swing state". Indicating that the politically savvy people of the state are often not swayed by mere party sentiments or rhetorics; but rather a keen awareness of what the real issues are and how vying candidates address those issues satisfactorily enough to convince them to cast their votes for them at the polls.

September 21 beckons and as the last few days to the election fly by; the contesting parties and their candidates are doubtless engaged in working out the permutations and expectations of how the people's decision could well be in their favour.

The outcome remains unpredictable, with both major parties working hard to secure the support of Edo’s diverse electorate.
